Optometrist- Celeste van der Merwe

Optometrists in a nutshell assess patients' eyes to identify vision defects, diseases, and injuries. Their duties include maintaining medical files, evaluating eye defects, recording treatment plans, and performing eye inspections. Celeste van der Merwe is an optometrist at Torga Optical in Windhoek. She mentions that she always wanted to be in the medical field but realised that she won’t be able to operate and ‘peck’ people with sharp objects. “It was really a light bulb moment and I said to myself; why don’t I look at what optometrists do?” You need to have the science field in grade 11 and 12 in order to become an optometrist. “Physical Science and Mathematics is a must to have on higher level,” Celeste mentions. A love for working with people is a vital characteristic trait one needs to possess as you are required to work with people every day.
