About the Event
A software engineer/developer is someone who applies the principles of software engineering to the design, development, maintenance, testing and evaluation of computer software.
Prior to the mid-1970s, software practitioners generally called themselves computer scientists, computer programmers or software developers, regardless of their actual jobs.
Many people prefer to call themselves software developer and programmer, because most widely agree what these terms mean, while the exact meaning of software engineer is still being debated.
Lorean de Vries has been a developer since 2006, and he studied and completed Computer Systems Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
He mentioned that mathematics and science are key academic requirements.
Persistence and passion
“Persistence is a key requirement and a passion for solving problems is also a big must,” he said.
De Vries further explained that these days, you can study to be a software developer and with this, programming is a key requirement.
At the same time, doing online courses on Udemy and LinkedIn Learning can also jumpstart your career.
“The most important thing in international markets is a solid portfolio, it will guarantee you a job. Nut in the Namibian market, you require college diplomas or degrees,” De Vries said.
